Nickel-A-Dance presents: A Tribute to Ronnell JohnsonThe Nickel-A-Dance is a free, family-friendly jazz concert series in New Orleans, celebrating the city's rich musical heritage. Founded in 1994, it features top local jazz musicians performing classic jazz, blues, and swing. Originally held at Café Brasil on Frenchmen Street, the series now takes place at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro on Sundays from 3:00--6:00 PM. The event is open to all ages and aims to make live jazz accessible to everyone. Ronnell Johnson was a celebrated New Orleans trombonist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and beloved ambassador of the city's musical heritage. A longtime member of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Johnson shared the spirit of New Orleans with audiences around the world through his powerful playing, soulful voice, and infectious energy. A founding member of the Coolbone Brass Band, Johnson came from a remarkable musical family and mastered an impressive range of instruments, including trombone, sousaphone, trumpet, piano, saxophone, flute, and drums. His extraordinary career brought him to stages around the world and included performances and collaborations with artists including Tom Waits, Steve Earle, Bonnie Raitt, My Morning Jacket, yasiin bey (Mos Def), and the Black Keys, among many others. Known for his generosity, humor, and extraordinary musicianship, Johnson made a lasting contribution to the New Orleans jazz and brass band tradition. Nickel-A-Dance presents: A Tribute to Ronnell Johnson celebrates his remarkable life, music, and enduring legacy---and the joy he brought to generations of musicians and audiences around the world.
